TOUR OF SOUTH

BY BISHOP OF MELANESIA

WARM. WELCOMES GIVEN. AUCKLAND, December 27. “I believe that and English clerical visitor a little while ago complained of the ‘complacent sleepiness’ of New Zealand church people, but I saw nothing of the kind—quite the reverse,” said the new Bishop -,f Melanesia, the Rt. Rev. W. H. Baddelev, yesterday, in discussing his recent trip to southern cities. '“1 wins very much struck by the large numbers of people who came to meetings and service and the very, warm welcome they gave me,” he said. “It was dear that they were really enthusiastic, and that Melansia had a strong anpeal -for them. One thing that impressed me was the large proportion'of men in the church congregations, and also at the meetings; it was certainly larger than one generally finds in England. I feel most grateful for the kindness and friendliness 1 met with all through the trip.” On His return to Auckland, Bishop Baddelev said, he had received a large English mail, which showed how deeply concerned were the people at Home over the loss of the Southern Cioiss. This was very evident from the fact that The Times published an editorial on the subject. He was very gratified to get a cablegram from the Archbishop of York, telling him that £2,500 I’ d been collected in ten days toward the. cost of chartering vessels untl a new mission ship could be provided.

The bishop mentioned that he was anxious to find a young medical man to take charge l of the mission hospital at Euiauhu, in the Solomon Islands, m place of Dr L. M. Mavbury. idio vas retiring. There were three New Zea-land-trained sisters on the hospital staff..
