In the tennis tourney J. Van Ryn defeated V. McGrath 6—l, 6—2; 11. Vines defeated J. Crawford 6—3, 3 6, 6—3; J. Crawford and H. Henman defeated E. Allison and >T. Van Ryn 3—6, C o 11 9, 4—o, 6—3; H. Vines and K. Gledhill’ defeated V. McGrath and C. Sproule 6—3, 9—7, 6—-2. Progress scores are America five rubbers, fifteen /sets, one hundred and thirty-four matches; Australia three rubbers, ten sets, one hundred and ' nineteen matches. There was a record attendance of over 8070. Vines and Crawford gave a great exhibition. Vines had bis full re verge for the previous defeat, his forcing drives to the corners proving winners Two Davis Cup pairs opposed each other —Crawford ,and Hopman (Australia) and Allison and Van Ryn (Am-e-ion.), who were also twice doubles champions of the world. Hopman played magnificently and contributed laigely to Australia’s win. It was a sparkling 'exhibition, and Australia thorouglily deserved her win against the experienced team work of the Americans. Van, Ryn’s experience was too much for McGrath, „who, "although playing brilliant tennis, lacks experience. Vines and Gledhill easily defeated Sp-oide and McGrath in straight sets. Vines delighted the crowd .with wonderful smashes. S>pule also? : played well.
