MR WICKHAM STEED’S VIEW
LONDON, December 12
Writing in the “Sunday I'jmes,” Mr Wickham Steed declares that the dangerously explosive situation in Jugoslavia has almost reached Hashpoint.
It may endanger the unity of the country, involve the whole of central and south-eastern Europe, and disturb Franco-Italiau relations, he adds. “Constant resistance by King Alexander, in his dictatorship of Jugoslavia, to the demands for a Federal system and local autonomy for the various provinces has driven the advocates of these to pin their faith to a republic.
Croatian extremists, supported by Italy, demand separation. King Alexander has foolishly used manifestos to foster discord between the Serbs and the Croats. “The Italian Fascists are supporting Bulgarian organisations, which aim at the recovery of the Jugoslavian- part of Macedonia. Italy is. also arranging military co-operation between Allxmia and Bulgaria, and 'anti-French feeling. France is regarded as Jugoslavia’s protector.”
