MAN’S HEAD BLOWN OFF

John . Mains Me GUI, a married man, aged 67, was found dead at his residence in North East Valley, with his head blown off. Indications suggest that a plug of gelignite wag placed in his mouth and detonated by means o$ ,an electric spark.

VICE-REGAL APPOINTMENTS

WELLINGTON, December 20,

Miss Diana Harris, a neice of Viscount Sidmouth, will arrive in New Zealand by the Rangitata, which is due at Auckland to-day. She will remain .in the Dominion for some time, having been appointed by their Excellencies the Governor-General and Lady Bledisloe to assist, m the duties of their pergonal staff. Lieutenant J. C. Elwortliy, R.N., who has occupied the post of aide-de-camp to tile Gov-ernor-General since his arrival in New Zealand nearly three years ago, will return to England at the end of January to rejoin the Royal Navy, on the expiration of the period for which he was'len;t by the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty for service on the Governor-General’s personal staff. Lieutenant Elwortliy will be succeeded by Lieutenant R. C. V. Thompson, R.N., who will arrive in New Zealand l>v the Tam a roa, due at Wellington on January 4.

PREPARING FOR FLIGHT,

WELLINGTON, Deeemper 21

Among the passengers who arrived at Wellington by the Zealandia yesterday from Sydney was Mr William Kingsford Smith, brother 0 f Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, who intends fiyirg across the Tasman Sea early in the new year. Kingsford Smith will handle all the arrangements in connection with his brother’s tour of the Dominion. Fie will be chiefly concerned in inspecting suitable landing grounds for the Southern Cross, and arranging the dates of the visits.
