SERIOUS CHARGE PREFERRED. (Per Press A ssoniation — Copyright.) WAIPUKURAU, December 19. At Waipukurau to-day, before Justices, Desmond Kenny, aged about 23, formerly of Wevaroa Training Farm and who was arrested recently at Wjliakatane, was' charged with attempted rape ou a woman of 32 years at South Makaretu, in October 1926. Accused reserved his defence and was committed for trial at the Supreme Court, Napier. - ... NOT A BETTING DEBT. CHRISTCHURCH, December 19. Referring to the award, Judge Ostler said the evidence indicated that the amount was loan anil was not a gaming debt, as had been . suggested by the defence, though McCombs - at times was a heavy bettor, and the defendants proved that Cox and James Walsh (husband of Elizabeth Walsh) were bookmakers at the time. However, the defendants also admitted that McCombs on other'occasions had borrowed £2OO from Cox which was repaid.
