CONFERENCE AT WESTPORT. AVESTPORT, December 17. A conference of representatives <jf Buller coal mining companies, the ininem’ council, the watersiders’ union, the Chamber of Commerce, the Buller Progress League, and local bodies, and other interests, was held in the Town Hall this afternoon to consider the coal question. The Mayor, Air J. H. Harkness, presided, and also present were Afessrs H. E. Holland, M.P., and Hon. W. H. Mclntyre, Af.L.C. There was a general discussion, in which the state of tile coal trade was discussed from various aspects. - 1 The meeting set up a committee to deaj with the question of reduced railway and shipping freights, and harbour charges, and generally to inquire into the cause of the slackness in the coalmining industry, and means whereby an improvement could be effected. It was ::!so decided to ask the Government to set up a commission to inquire comprehensively into the production, transport nnd marketing of coal.
