JUBILEE BEACON
CARNIVAL SPIRIT AT HAWERA. (Per Press Association Copyright.} HAWERA, December 19. Carnival spirit reigned at -Hawera on Saturday when several thousands thronged the streets for the open air concerts, and fancy dress dancing, which continued from 9.30 in the evening till midnight, on the occasion of the switching-011 ceremony of the jubilee beacon installed on the neon light principle, to commemorate the borough jubilee of February last. The beacon is formed by a series of lights circling the top of the water
tower, 166 feet above ground level, and said to be New Zealand’s highest sky sign. It will show nightly from sunset to 2 a.m., and will be visible over a wide area. It lias been chartered by the Marine Department.
