VESSELS COLLIDE N.Z. TRAWLER AND LINER. (Australian Pres* issociation.) PERTH, December 18. . The trawler “South Sea’’ has arrived her© from Hull, en route to Lyttelon. The chief engineer, Mr Morris, relates that when leaving Las Palmas, after -bunkering, the trawler collided with the ten thousand ton liner, Stonepool, engaged in the South African trade. The trawler’s bows were stove in to the waterline. Captain Dowell transferred his wife to the liner, which was so badly damaged that she had been beached, and after

a desperate struggle, the foredeck being awash, she reached land nine miles distant.

Mrs Dowell says that she can claim to liavo been in two wrecks in one day. The “South Sea,” after bunkering, leaves Freemantle for Lyttelton direct. FIRE OUTBREAK ON SHIP.

SYDNEY, December 19. A fire in number one hold of the steamer Taronga, 6700 tons, loading wool at Pyrmont, yesterday afternoon required the efforts of 120 firemen till the evening before it was controlled. The outbreak occurred among copra loaded at Rafaul, which burned lyBrigades and fire floats poured large quantities of water into the hold and the ship developed such a list that the fire floats had to begin pumping the water out on one side while the fire fighters continued on the other side. The damage amounted to five thousand pounds. TARONGA TO SAIL TO-MORROW.

She was last seen on Wednesday, when attempting to make her way through ice on a return trip from Bellobella, seventyfive miles distant from this point.
