For catching a 241 b eel in the llutt rver about half a mile above Silverstream railway bridge, Master 11. G. Benefield, of Lower Hutt, has been awarded a free boys’ license for the present trout season. The eel was 4ft 6in long and 16* inches in girth. , Sir Henry Buckleton, general manner of the Bank of New Zealand, completed fifty-four years’ service with the bank on Thursday. He joined the bank’s Sydney branch as a boy in 1878, and his salary was then £SO per annum. After a long perid, of service in Australia Sir Henry was transferred from the Melbourne branch —where he was acting-accountant—to New Zealand to fill the position of accountant at the Hamilton branch of the bank. This was in 1892. A year later he was appointed accountant at Auckland. His first post as manager was at the New Plymouth branch. In 190 Ghe was appointed manager at Auckland, and in 1920 he was appointed general manager. Sir Henry was knighted in 1929 for distinguished services in banking in New Zealand.

Fire totally destroyed the Bellvue Co-operative Coal Mining Party’s binns, screening plant, and a newlyerected coal chute, together with over 100 tons of coal, at the Eight Mile, on the Groymouth-Westport Coastal Roacl yesterday morning. The Bellvue mine, which is one of the largest co-operative mines on the West Coast, has been operative for the past tour years, and has employed up to twenty men, there being nine men at present employed there. A new chute, costing approximately £BO, has just been completed, :md this was also destroyed. It should take about three weaks or a month for the lire to burn out properly, when it is likely new binns will have to be erected at tile cost of about £7OO. The binns destroyed cost approximately that amount and the party will be heavy losers as the Finns and contents were only insured for £SOO, with the Mercantile and General Insurance Company.
