WOOL INDUSTRY
THE FIRST SALE AT TIMARU FIRMER PRICES RECORDED. (Per Press Association Copyright.) TIMARTJ, December 16. The first wool sale of the season in South Canterbury was held in Timaru to-night, when a . catalogue of 10,078 bales was offered to a full and repre sentative bench of buyers, who competed. exceedingly keenly from the outset, the chief competition coming from the continental section. Bradford were more in the picture than at the recent sale at Christchurch, the wool apparently being more in keeping than their requirements. The wool opened up in heavier condition than at Christchurch, but slightly better than at the opening sale at this centre last year, being much brighter and freer from dust. Comparing the prices with Christchurch, these can be described as being very firm, and in the sellers’ favour. Passings were comparatively few. Very little held-over wool was offered at auction, but these lots kept remarkably well, and vsliowed very little discoloration. There was a large gallery of the who displayed keen interest throughout the sale. Top price at the sale was for a lino of sixteen bales of fine Merino which realised lid per lb- Halfbred brought up to 10i d, and three-quarter-bred up to 9>d There was good competition also foe good halfbred necks, the prices of which brought up to 9Jd'. The who e catalogue was disposed of in two hours and a half.
