NARROW ESCAPE
EXPLOSION occurs on launch

AUCKLAND. December 13
The 24-foot launch Beth, owned by Mr C. H. Clarke, of Mahuvangi Heads, was destroyed. by fire when hauled up on th e peach near the owner's property. •Mr. Clarke ran the launch on the ,beach to effect repairs t 0 the engine. He went aboard, at about eleven o’clock this, morning . and on entering the engine roorft . <he - i-truOk a match.- There ’was an'immediate explosion and the launch took fir© from end to .end. Mr Clarke escaped serious injury, but bis face and hands were blackened and his clothes damaged. Ac, the boat was some distance from the water nothing could be dune to suppress the flames and the launch was completely destroyed, only the rudder, the engine and a piece k the- keel being left.
