Mil J. NIVEN FARE WELLED. Organised by tub pupils and /staff of the Hokitika District High School an enjoyable ck. 1102 was held in the Soldiers’ Hall last evening when occasion was taken to bid farewell topMr J. Niven, who has been on the teaching Staff for a period of thirteen yeans, and who has now pevered 'his connection with .the school, and also with the profession. - _ • There was d very large attendance including pupils, ex-pupils, . members of the. .staff, member-? of- the School Committee, and friends. During '.. the evening the,Rector (Mr J. L. Afenzies) referred to. t.he forthcoming departure from Hokitika, of Mr Niven, and spoke of the value of his services to the ■School dining his association with it. On behalf, of the pupils,. Colin Cox and Isohel Bed thanked Mr Niven for tlie assistance he had given the pupils and wished him long and lia-ppy. retirement. They presented him with! a ruc-eack, asking him, to accept it with the good wishes of'the present pupils.

Mr Niven was presented with. ,a pocket wallet by Mr C. Preston on behalf of the old pupils, Mr A. Shannon paying tribute to their guest’s work at the School. • ( Messns A. C J . Armstrong and H. W. R. Sweney, representing the, - School Committee, sipoke in. similar strain, and wishing Mir Niven aid success iu the future, handed him a travelling rug. •• -• . 1 Mr Niven acknowledged the tributes paid to him and the .presentations made, and was received l with musical honours',. ■ .....■
