A REPORTED FIND
IN TATF'O DISTRICT.
It is reported that Charles Edwards and party who have been prospecting in T'aipo district have discovered several 'leaders carrying gold near the junctjcn tif Julia creek with Taipo 'fiver. Tlie quartz, it is stated, is a heavy 'inasive sulphide ore, with slaty intrusions, and the leader carrying visible gold has ' been snbjed.edy to assay, showing its content to include fchi-r ounces seven pennyweights of silver to the ton. This is the report of the Mines Department on the samples. There are leadersrunning into Julia ‘Creek, and the party have begun a drive across the leaders in order to te.-it the visible prosjiects, this drive being one calculated to cut the main reef in a. southerly direction. The best assay is from a six inch leader, the next ones being two and a dial f inches in width and one of them assaying 2dwts 7grs of gold and cdvvfs of silver' to the ton. All of tlie leaders tested show a little gold from 2 grams to the ton upwards.
The party have just discover'd another reef of quartz outcrop further down the valley This has a.n average width of six feet, and a Ismail parcel of the stone was on Monday night brought to Greymouth and sent to Reef ton for assay.
The reef at Gold Creek off Julia Creek is only four miles from the formerly well-known Wilson’s Reward reef on the river Wilberforce, at the Canterbury side of Pope’s Pass. The new reef leaders are on the same line or “strike” of the country as Wilson’s Reward, but are on the Westland 'side of the main divide. The track up the Taipo is rough, and slashers were needed when taking in tucker, with tlie aid of pack horses' for a considerable distance. - ■ ,
