A MAORI PA

ALLEGED INSANITARY CONDITIONS.

W«ELLINGTON, December 9. The insanitary conditions prevailing at the .Porirua Maori Pa and the prevail n,.. of tuberculosis among the inhabitants were referred to by the chairman of the Makara County Caunc 1 (Mr Windley) at the monthly meeting of that body to-day.

He said the he: Ith of the children the Porirua Public School was menaced as the result of their coming in contact with the Maori pup ( ds from the the pa. The pa was overcrowded /and conditions generally were very insanitary. Such a state of affairs had existed for a long time. water supply had been laid on, but it was little help. Apart from the inspections marie by the Council’s inspectors nothing had been done. It was the Native Department’s responsibility, and it should attend to the matter. His opinion was that the 'Native Department was not able to do what it would like because there was nov money available.

There were eight cases of tuberjflosis in the pa 'at the present time, and it was a disgrace that such a state of affairs sKouTd continue when ’the Government was doing Or professing to do what it could to etatnp out the disease. Parents whose children attended the Porirua School deserved consideration, and that was one of the reasons why ha mentioned the matter.

A motion was carried that th e Council bring the matter to the notice of tb e Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes).
