Yesterday afternoon, a Chevrolet motor lorry, belonging to the Blackball Coal Company, and driven by Harry Davies went oven a 40ft bank at Eorde’s Creek near the Blackball Coal Company’s bins on the BlackballRoa road. It appears that Davies was ta ping rubbish over the almost perpendicular bank when the lorry went over the log, which is used as a stop, at the edge of the bank. The. lorry was extensively damaged but the driver miraculously escaped injury.

To many parents in Hokitika who are faced with the vital question of sending their boys and girls back to school in preference to permitting them to come under the influence of the stieets, the matter of ways and means of continuing their education, in particular the providing the children with books, is a big problem. However, strong efforts are now being made to ease parents much of this Kv> rr ien, and many, who by reason of the difficult times, would find it difficult to equip their children- folly, will receive assistance as the result of an urgent appeal that is now being made to ex-pupils, who have first year high school text books to present them to the school. It is not to be considered for one moment that the children should be debarred from continuing their studies on, account of the present stringency, and it is hoped that all ex-pupils will rally round and answer the appeal in as hearty and fruitful a manner as possible, as the utmost importance attaches to the result.
