HOKITIKA COUNCIL MEETING.

The Hokitika Borough Council met

last evening. Present, the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), and Crs. J. King, 1). Stuart, 1. \v. Duff, and D. J. Evans. Apologies were received from Ci\> E. leichennann, G. Heinz, A. R. Eicock and E. W. Heenan. Inward correspondence was received a.s follow:

that seasonal passenger service licenses, Hokitika to Arthur’s Pass had been issued to Newmans Motors Ltd. with permission to deviate through Kuinara

on race day©.—Received. Otago Electric Power Board, asking co-operation in approaching the Government to induce a compulsory conversion to Local Bodies loans.—'The letter was received the Council con-

sidering the matter too delicate to take part in.

The Town Clerk, Petono, intimated that Petono Council is concerned with

.tile proposed new legislation in connection with the Union of Boroughs, whereby a Commission would have the power to force amalgamation with another Borough, and suggesting that this Council communicates with the Member for Westland to oppose tbo cl-uses.—Received. Mr C. J. Barrett-, asking under what conditions Municipal Reserve -535 could bo leased.—lnformation supplied. ■ '

Mr W. Thompson, Hokitika, ..intimated that as lessee of municipal reserve No. 452, he .was anxious to improve the land. The fencing is bad and about two ewt. of barbed wire is required along Hau Hau road and if the Council will supply wire, applicant is prepared to improve- the land by -sowing it in grass seed and clover, as soon a-s the growth is burnt.—Received, no action taken. Mr W. J. Barrow enclosed an account for £1 14s 6d being damages incurred in an accident, claiming the Council was liable.—Referred, to the Borough solicitor.

The financial statement showed that receipts- amounted to £368 2s 5d and payments to £671 Os 4d. The District Fund showed a debit balance of £156 4s Id. Accounts totalling £678 7s 6d were passed for payment.

It was resolved to obtain information as to the .best means of getting gravel down in the pit, it being stated that present condition® were not entirely safe. i The registration fees for dogs were renewed a® follow : —Domestic dogs 10s, cattle dogs 2» 6d.

FOREMAN’S REPORT. The first week wa® occupied in repairing the water main through Cass Square, four new pipe® being put in, a fire plug and valve being repaired for the fire brigade demonstration held on Saturday the sth. On ■ that date I started my annual holidays beginning work again on the 19th. While away Mr’Cut bush was engaged in making pipes and attending to the water which employed most of his time. This mouth an unusual number of breaks and leaks occurred on the line between the Kanieri Forks and about the town. Two new pipes were put in the Weld Street main near the railway crossing, and two new pipes in the Hampden Street main between Sewell and Tanered Streets, and a number of bursts and! teaks repaired.

With the relief workers Park Street was extended to Rolleston. Street from Sale tSreet, fifteen 18 inch concrete pipes were put in at the junction of Rolleston Street to carry on the street to Davie Street, screenings from the pit are being used for the foundation, gravel being used after for coating. A quantity of gravel wais screened at the Sale Street pit- land distributed on various streets. A number of relief workers were engaged on the botanical reserve digging and cleaning it up. Two are on the cemetery hill widening and grading the approach, two 'are on the footpath north Revoll iStrect chipping and cleainng the growth off; three are at the abattoirs 1 cleaning out ’the drains; three were engaged scything growth in Weld and Stafford Streets. Park Street dirain on the north side was cleaned out between Hall land Sale Street®, while a number was on the aerodrome and town reserves, Cass Square and Macawl rew Square. The Borough horse i« still lame and unable to work and l I would suggest the council procure the opinion of a vet as to its condition.

The average depth of water in the reservoir for the month was oft. 7in.
