In Wellington the error was rectified almost at the start of the examination. The matter would be brought be. ore the examiner, he said, and the executive would see that whatever should be (lone would be done.
A SUGGESTED INQUIRY
DUNEDIN, December 7
In previous years complaints have been made of printers’ errors in examination papers set for candidates in University examinations, and strong representations have been made to the Senate of the New Zealand Univesity by secondary school teachers and otfrers interested that more care should be taken in supervising the proofreading. This year a blunder of a rather serious nature, and one calculated to' cause a great deal of anxiety to candidates and their parents, has been made.'ln the mathematics paper of the University entrance examination the regulations provide clearly fqr a two-hour paper in each branch of that subject, but yesterday morning cadidates and supervisors alike were amazed to read at the top of the algebra paper; ’‘Time allewed, three hours.” The supervisor, our informant states allowed two hours only, as provided by the regulations, and also the timh-table issued to candidates, hut whether this was done in other centres is not yet known. From the length and difficulty of the paper it is suggested that the person who -set the questions intended them for a three-hour paper; but whether that is so or not it is clear that an unfortunate mistake has been made, the responsibility for which may*be expected to form the subject of' an inquiry by the Senate.
