WASHINGTON. December 8

The United States Coastguard recently seized the Canadian vessel “Mazel Tov’ as a rum runner.

A warning that Canada’s antismuggling co-operation with the United States would become virtually impossible if the United States continues her twelve-mile limit seizures of vessels under the tariff law, has been served oil the United ‘States by the Canadian Government.

The Canadian Minister to U.S.A.Mr W. D. Herridge, told the U.S.A. State Department that Canada refuse to recognise the right of the United States to make seizures of suspected rum-runners outside of the three mile limit, except under the Treaty between the two countries permitting seizure within one hour’s sailing of the shore. “Unless the United States accepts this position,” Mr Herridge snidj "aiiy other course would tend to frustrate the co-operation rendered by His Majesty’s Government in Canada, which has provided effective assistance to your Government in curtailing, and insofar as Canadian vessels are concerned, almost eliminating, the contraband traffic on the coasts of the United States.”

Mr Herridge entered a protest against the United States’ seizure of the Canadian vessel “Mazel Tov,” eleven and a half miles off the Massachuestts coast.

This seizure has been upheld in the Lower Federal Courts, under the Tariff Act, 1930, and it is now before the Supreme Court.

PROTEST AGAINST SEIZURE.

OTTAWA,December 8

A protest has been made to Washington against the seizure of Canadian liquor, ships. This is stated unofficially to be the prelude to a complete reversal of the Government’s attitude to wards the United States prohibition law.

It is reported that the Canadian ban on liquor export is about to be lifted. The -Canadian Government declared that it 'was tired o-f constant shipping complications through the United States liquor searches.
