In the diamond industry of the Union of South Africa at the end- of 1931, stones to the phenomenal value of about £312,000,000, had been produced.

Th© total mineral wealth produced in the Union up to end of 1931 amounted to close upon £1,600,000,000 of which approximately 71.8 per cent, was gold; 19.6 per cent, diamonds, 5.7 per cent, coal and 2.9 per cent, in respect of other minerals.
