A GAMING HOUSE
CHARGE AGAINST BUTCHER. (Per Press Association — Copyright.) AUCKLAND, December 8. A charge of keeping premises at 401 New North Road as a common gaming house was preferred against Geoige William Tucker, aged 45, butcher, in the Police Court, before Mr W. IL McKean, S.M. Mr Moody represented accused, who pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said that as a. result of a complaint a constable went to accused’s place and laid bets to the extent of 22/6. On Saturday Detectives Moore and Brady raided the premises. The accused was quite candid, and said he was an agent for one ot the big men in the city. He admitted lie had been taking bets l° r eighteen months.
“It is the same old tale,” Mr Kelly added. “These hnen are agents for bigger men, whose names they will not disclose, and yet they take the risk of this business.” Mr Moody said accused was a married man with three children. His betting material was ivery small. He merely received a. commission on befs. It wa&, however, a fair catch. He would get no assistance from his principal. “I coiisjder some of the big men should suffer themselves,” Mr Moodv added.
