TRADE WITH RUSSIA
DISCUSSION IN THE COMMONS.
WHAT IS POLICY OF SOVIET?
• (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Deecmber 8. An important statement on relations with Russia, was made by Capt. Eden, in reply to a Commons question, regarding the activities of the third internationale.
Capt. Eden said that Sir J, Simon had pointed out to the Ambassador that various matters of difficulty and complexity, particularly in relation to trade between the Soviet and Britain Would shortly arise for discussion between the two Governments. If the Soviet Government wished these matters to be discussed in the usual manner as beween Governments in fiiendly relations, they must apologise for the language in ail “Izestia” article and to ensure that no further statements of the kind referred to be made. It was emphasised to the Russian ambassador, M. Maisky, the future indulgence in these tactics would only confuse the issue between tile commeicial negotiations and propaganda, and render the former, which should be treated on its merits, impossible of conclusion.
Sir J. Simon had added that as the previous assurance given on behalf of the British Government was ignored, he would repeat finally and categorically, that the policy of His Majesty’s Government is to promote trade relation on a permanent stable basis, and they expect the Soviet Government to state clearly in its reply what their policy is towards this country. Sir J. Simon now has received an oral reply from the Soviet ambassador, which was under, consideration.
