AMERICANS FOR AUSTRALIA
AUCKLAND, December 5. To appear at carnivals in Victoria, Queensland, and Tasmania, Frank Kurtz,' who represented America in the fancy diving at the last Olympic Games, and Maiola Ka'lili, of Honolulu, who also -went to the Games as a member of America’s 800 metre relay team, are 'through passengers to Melbourne by the 'Monterey. Kurtz, who is only 18, was placed third in the high fancy dive at Los Angeles, being beaten by Harold Smith and Mickey Riley, both members of Kurtz’s own club. Kurtz was placed ahead of Smith at the American trials, and he is confident that he will win the world title if selected .for the next Games. The young American,- who is taking-the commercial course at the University of South ■California, is a keen air pilot, and claims the junior speed flying -record of the world. Kalili, a Hawaiian, is a sprint gwimmqr .Of note;' and a fine all-rounder. The American relay team, of which he was a member, was placed awstd to Japan, both 't'enm« registering times that were better. than the previous ,record. 4 Both Kurtz and Kalili expect td appear in carnivals in New Zealand on their way back to America.
