SCENES DURING ROYAL VISIT

A SCUFFLE WITH THE POLICE

LONDON, December 2,

Three men were' arrested during a. scuffle wi.h police as Prince George was arriving at Queen Victoria’s Seamen’s Rest, Jeremiah Street, poplar, last night.

The incident followed a wait of several hours by .a crowd of unemployed seamen at the corner of Jeremiah Street /and El :st India Dock Road for the arrival of Prince George to open the extension of the new memorial wing of the mission. Prince George was not aware of the scuffle which had taken, place. Shouts of “We want bread” were mingled with cheers .and the shrill cries of dozens of children, “We want everything.” An hour or so before the arrival of the Royal car, a -speaker bad addressed a meeting not far from the mission. The meeting, however, hind ended.

v Several men lilad chalked offensive slogans ’on the roadway and oh tl.e walls of the mission.

By this time mounted and foot police in charge of a. superintendent had gathered in Jeremiah Street. The superintendent called out to a mission worker to wash the chalked notiers from the walls, and the rain w,ashed the others from the roadway. It was while the police were: clearing a way for the Rioyrl oar that the scuffle occurred. Four men were concerned. Three were immediately arrested and hiistMl out of the way, and the fourth ran aw,ay and iumped on n passing motor-lorry. The police then dispersed the crowd of unemployed men.

The Prince after greeting the superintendent o,f the mission, the Rev. 'Tho/tnas A. Etribleton, a.nd other officials, spent an hour in the building. There were cheers from a large crowd when he left.
