Five hundred passengers on the Contcdisavoia breathlessly watched a seaman, Amatruda, dangling from the end ,of a seventy foot rope above the turbulent Atlantic, risking his life to plug a ten inch leak, The liner broke-down eight hundred miles from New York owing to a defect in the 'discharge pipe, causing trouble in the. turbo generator, and resulting in 'the/leak. Amatruda responded to the call for volunteers. He was /frequently submerged, and fvorked for three hours under floodlights. The vessel proceed-' ed at a reduced speed, the stabilisers working well. 1 The paij-engeis rewarded Amatruda whom th e Government probably will recognise.
