N.Z. PUPILS TO JOIN R.A.F.

WELLINGTON, November 30. Two young ■ New Zealand’ pilots, Messrs. P. A. McWhannell, of the Wellington Aero Club, and Mr Bruce Hope, of the Canterbury Aero Club, are leaving this week for England, with the intehtion of entering the Royal Air Force on short service commissions. Both i have been recommended by the Director of. Air Services,' Squadron-Leader T. M. Wilkes. Mr Peter McWhannell is the son of Mr P. McWhannell, of Moxham Avenue, a well-known bowler. SquadronLeader G. L. Stedman, pilot instructor to the Wellington Aero Club, found him a very apt pupil, and he went solo after about 3£ hours’ dual instruction, passing the tests for his A license on October 12. ?Mr McWhannell is a former pupil of Kilbirnie School and an old boy of Wellington College, and after leaving college he joined the Public Service, being engaged in the Customs Department. Mr Bruce Hope is a member of the Canterbury Aero Club, and gained his pilot’s A license in September last. He is 21 years of age and joined the club about two years ago. He is a brother of Mr R. W. Hope, a former Manawatu, Petone.. and New Zealand representative cricketer, who is how in Canterbury. Both will leave Auckland for Sydney by the Monowai on Thursday on their way to England. ~
