EVENING SPORTS

MEETING ON CASS SQUARE. Favoured with pleasant conditions the opening evening meeting of the Hokitika Cycling Club on Cass Square yesterday met with good public support. Three cycle races, and a ladies’ * 50yds. handicap comprised the propramme, and, although the times recorded were not the best that competitors are capable of, more pre-. paration and further competition will add the desired speed. The Band was also in attendance and their several items were much appreciated. The winners for the evening’were: •G. Collett, 7 points,jiljTeßeiiLyn.ri’s Miniature Cup, and Turner rCup ; K. Hewlett, 6 points, 2; E. Cook, 3 points, 3; R. Saxon and R. Olson, 1 point, equal, 4. Tire results were: Ladies’ 50yds.—VI. Herring (2yds.) 1; J. Collett (scr.) 2. Also started:— E. Collett (scr.), E. Dale (Iyd.), A.. Davidson (2yds.) , and R. Stapleton (lyd.) was third. Half-mile cycle.—First Heat:— G. - Collett (50yds.) 1; E. Olsen (20yds.) 2. Also started.—J. Havill (scr), S. The Club makes .an urgent ap-peal to the children and guardians to keep off the 1 cycle track, as thp serious danger to both child and riders is obvious to everybody. •A committee meeting as held following the sports, there being present— Messrs J. On Wednesday next, December 7, a road race for the Gillman Cup-will be run, starting at 3.30 p.m. The race will be run over three laps of the course, starting from the Pioneer Hotel, proceeding along Bealey St. Stafford St. out to the KanieriHokitika sawmill gate and back via Livingstone St. andl Gibson Quay, the approximate distance being .8 miles. ." .

The prize will he first £1 and tyre and tube, presented by P.addt Ross; seoond 12s 6d and. third ss, The nomination fee was fixed at 2s.
