THREE CONTESTANTS

Polling in the by-election 'to fill the' vacancy in. the House of ’ Representa-tives’-caused by the death of Mr G. C. C. Black wi.l take place throughout the -uctueka electorate tCi-inoriow, December 1. Thive candidates are contacting the seat, Mr H. J. Holyoake (Coaiiuon), Mr P. C. Webb (Laoour), and the Hou. R. McKenzie (independent Lmeral-Labour).

For the general election last year there- wore 'Bao3 pbaple on the •roll. - Of this number 7o id electors exercised the .‘franchise, Mr Black, the euccOfis-li'i-f candidate, receiving 4180 votes, ■while 3660 recorded their votes in favour of Mr HolyOake. Since the g e nevai election there have been 912 new registrations and the number of- removals by deaths and transfers to other electorates has been 154. There b therefore an increased voting strength of 758 over last year. ■'Motreka is a.i- extremely scattered electorate and there ar e ICO polling places. The biggest voting centres are jKaraniea, Motueka, Murchison,Riofton, Takaka, TJniukuri, and Upper Moutere. Postal voting facilities w)VI be <'tvi.iliable, and those electors who are unable t 0 go to a polling place due to sickness or- other causes should apply -to the returning officer at Motueka;- who will supply necessary application forms- and full information as t - the procedure to be followed. There is provision in the Electoral .Act for absentee voting, and those electors of -Motueka who will ba absent from the on election day may exercise their vote s at • any P'st - office. The privilege of voting by this means extends only to persons i hose tames are on the -Motueka: roll and- who still retain their residential: Qualifications. ' For instance, persons who have ; qualified for registration' in \ nother electoral district, by three months’ residence therein, lose their “residential qual’fication” for 'Motueka and are .not entitled to vote as ab e.itee voters. - - • ;

Absentee voters vote on the -day of election onfy, and as personal application is ' necessary each e'ector will, •before bein'* a •votin'* paper, bfi required to, declare tlrat his name is on the Motueka roll and that he is not qualified to be enrobed as an elector of any other electoral district. AN ACTIVE CAMPAIGN. ' MOTUEKA, November 28. There is- glorious weather for the 1 by-election campaign and Motueka is having a- veritable flood of political talk.' The Right Hon. J. G. Coates,' the Hon. E. A. Ransom and Messrs \V. P. Ende-an, ’J. ■ N." Massey* Wy J. Poison and W. A. Bodkin any speaking in support of the. Government ' candidate, 'Mr K. J.. Holyoake, and Me’sni, H. E. Holland, F. Langstone,-- Clyde: C'brp and J. McCombs are addressing meetings on hehalf 'of Mr P.vC. Webb,the Labour nominee.

The meetings are being very well attended, and all thre e halls in Motueka township have been booked for the night before the election. Mr Webb’s supporter,s are very confident ;that h e - will win th e seat by a substantial majority. The Hon. Roderick McKenzie, the Incl pendent 'Liberal-Labour candidate, ■who was Minister of Public Works in the first Ward Administration stated in an election address that he supported some of the Government’s Public. Works proposals, but not many. He declared that he would sooner support Labour in some things than the Government, and would join 'MessHf Rushworth, Atmore and Wilkinson if they played flair with the electors.
