A PLOT ALLEGED
ILLNESS OF EX-CHIEF JUSTICE, j JAMAICA INCIDENTS. LONDON, November 20. Extraordinary disclosures, pointing to a poison pint against ins lire, were name yesterday by Sir Inclines BarrettLennard, who until recent.y was Ghiet Justice of Jamaica. sir Fiennes, who is in England, stated that lie had written to a Jamaican newspaper drawing attention to the following incidents winch took place during liis term of office:— lie was-gravely ill, as the result or three hemorrhages in 1930; In November, lu3o, Lady Barrett-Lennard showed' symptoms of poisoning; Lady Swet- I thhliaiii (wife off a former Governor ot Jamaica)j who was their guest, showed similar symptoms; A servant who left the household about the same time wrote later complaining that she had been poisoned. “Since my return to England,” said mi- Fiennes, “a thorough medical examnation has left me with no doubt wiiatsver .that a deliberate attempt on my
life was made by means of poison, but it is one of those cases where no proof is available. “In 1929 I liad occasion to propose sentence of imprisonment on a negrh orator for very gross contempt of Court. His sentence was concurred in by an acting Judge of the Court, but dissented from by a ijudge next m seniority to me.
“The immediate result was that a negro publication described me as ‘harsh and unsympathetic.’ It is not improbable that some feeling was excited in the minds hf the man’s supporters.” |
