It was the first time in history that so many flood gates have been swung wide, only twelve having'been opened during the great flood of 1923. Officials said that the crest was

reached at 4 p.m. on Monday, but there ( is the possibility of a greater rise because of the stormy conditions on the Atlantic side continuing.
