MR DANIEL BUCKLEY.

(United Press Association—By FJectrio Telegraph—Copyright; DUBLIN, November 26/ Mr Daniel Buckley a shopkeeper, ’ who is as former member of the Dail Eireann has been appointed Governor General of the Irish Free State. A communique states: “His Majesty the King has appointed Mr Daniel Buckley as Governor-General on the advice of the Free State Executive.”

The- appointment has proved a tremendous surprise, but Mr Buckley is esteemed by all classes. Mr Buckley recently retired from business, transferring his shop to his son.

The new Governor-General is closely interested in the Irish national movements, and especially in the revival of the Irish language. Mr Buckley participated in the Irish rebellion of Easter 1916. He organised a small red band of volunteers who marched on Dublin. He was later arrested and was deported. He was released at the following Christmas amnesty.

Mr Buckley was elected a Deputy in the Dail Eireann for Kildare. He voted against the acceptance of the Anglo-Irish treaty. He was defeated in the 1931 election.

Donald Buckley kept three establishments, a grocery shop, a bicycle store and an inn at Maymouth. ' Mr Buckley is 55 years of age and wia® educated at the Jesuit school, Dublin. He is known as a “Die hard Irish” speaker, always using Irish in preference to English. He is a close friend of Mr de Valera and also a friend of Patrick Pearoe, the leader of the rebellion of 1916, whose school his son attended. Mr Buckley to-day took the oath' of allegiance' to the King, the Chief Justice administering the oath. Hi's commission was signed by His Majesty and unprecedentedly was sent to the Free State, by post. It is not decided whether he will

receive .a salary of- £IO,OOO a .year
