In an interesting-review received by th e Minister for Industries and Commerce (the Hon. K. Masters) from the New Zealand Trade. Commissioner, Mr J. W. Collins, the latter, referring to the butter output shows that production for the- eight mouths ended August 31st. of this year for the whole of Canada, totalled 147,353,0C01b, as compared with 155,988,9661 b for the corner ending period of 1931, which represonterl a decrease of 5.5 per cent. In the month of August there w:\s <i Dominion dberease of 3,100,00011). Holdings had also declined considerably. The .average at October Ist for five • yers was 31,282,621!!) of creamery butior and 639,5311 b. of dairy butter. “This indicates a shortage of 8,193,0001 b over last year’s stock in the creamery grade, and a shortage of nearly 1,813,0301 b this year on the fivcvear average,” the review states. “The decrease in production continued in Setnembor in mc-st of the provinces. The weather conditions have .iffc'dri! the Prairie and Western Provinces, but in Quebec and Ontario, two great butter-producing areas, the weather has contin id to ho milder than usual. The dr v we n thrr, cornhinod with low prices for butter-fat, have checked
the output, and this lias contributed! to the decline in stocks. It must not, however, be assumed that because of tile near approach of winter the position will, show further recessions. While prairie supplies may not increase, production in Ontario and Quebec is dependent to a large extent ion market prices. Ample and cheap winter foods are availabU for milch cows, and if the price of sputter ■risss to 25 cents or more, it is possible that this will bring about greatly increased supplies in the two provinces which already provide the bulk of butter for Eastern Canada.”
