BUILDING SUBSIDY
£900,000 PAID. END OF THE SCHEME. (Per Press Association Copyright.) WELLINGTON, November 25. , A reminder that the building subsidy scheme will operate only until December 31st was issued to-day by the Acting-Minister of Employment, Mr Hamilton.
The Minister said that the total value of the building work approved for this subsidy up to date was approximately £900,000. “The rules provide,” said the Minister, “that the subsidy will be payable after December 31 in respect of any man engaged and actually started on approved works prior to December 31, but the wages of any men engaged after that date will not be subject to the subsidy. Furthermore, if the works are not completed in June next, the amount of the subsidy will be reduced to one-half in respect of the wages earned on and after July 1, 1933. “There is no doubt whatever,” continued the Minister, “that the scheme has had a most stimulating effect on the building industry. This is proved by the figures, which disclose that the monthly value of building permits alone has more than doubled as against the figures for the period immediately prior to commencing the subsidy.”
