THE DEATH OF SLATIN PASHA.
POLITICIAN, SOLDIER, SLAVE.
LONDON, November 10. Rudolf Slatin Pasha, the friend of General Gordon, lias, died in Vienna at the age of 75. His life was crowded with adventure. After serving as an officer in the Austrian Army, the quest of adventure took him in 1878 to Egypt, where }ie came under the notice of General Gordon, who gave him an appointment in the Sudan administration.
Promotion came to him rapidly and in 188-f he became Governor of Dnfur. Be led his army in nearly 30 battles against rebellious sheiks, but eventually he was captured by the Mahdi, who kept him a prisoner for 12 years. For long ho was the personal attendant of the Mahdi’s chief lieutenant, but later, being suspected of .having secret communication with General Gondon, then beseiged in Khartoum, he was put in chains. After Khartoum fell three black soldiers entered his tent carrying a bundle. They opened it and from it fell the head of Gordon.
It was not until 1895 that Slatin Pasha managed to escape and rejoin the Egyptian Army, in which lie became an Inspector-General under Lord Kitchener,
