WELLINGTON, Novembef 11. A fine example of New Zelaland workmanship, the first of the new “K” class locomotives left t e Hutt railway workshops yesterda. morning on a trial run. The new “K” locomotives are alme exclusively a New Zealand product and with the exception of roller bear ings and a few special fittings, ever part was manufactured from ra' material in the railway workshops Companion engines to “K” 900 nr under construction a,t Hutt, 'and threw type will give greater efficiency i fuel and running costs than the usin' “AB” heavy duty locomotives. The n'ew engine weighs 136 ton nis compared with 85 tons for tin “AB” class locomotive, and its mill nr capacity is 50 per cent, greater tlr l that of tlie existing type of' hear dutv engine. This ability to haul increased lannis expected, to result in reduced running ecst-s. It is likely that production will be continued until 3C. “K” engines ire in service, and it i‘ expected to average, an output of one a month.
