HOSPITALS

GREY BOARD ATTITUDE.

GRDYMOUTH, November 8. At a meeting of the Grtey Hospital Board yesterday, the Bay of Islands Hospital Board wrote regarding the proposed amendments to the Hospital and Charitable Aif Act, and solicited the support of the Board in the following resolution: “That any Commission set up to considc. objections to a union of hospital 1 districts, or to the closing of any hospital, shall be presided over by a Magistrate, and that the assistance of all Boards be requested to have this proviso included in the proposed (amendments.” Mr Mulcane thought three Hospital Boards on the West Coast was ridiculous. Due to its efficiency, the Grey Hospital got the bulk of the work at present. There was no doubt that it was an expense on the ratepayers in this particular area. He moved that tlie> circular be received and considered at the next meeting of the Board. Mr Barrowman said it would not be likely that this Hospital would go out of commission. T >.e Chairman said they could not deal with any more patients. To his mind it would be false economy and they would have to build on here and it would be waste. The roads in the district cduld not be compared with other places and people would be dead by the time they were brought to hospital from such places as from, the Waiho or from, the Reefton end. Mr Mulcare said he would not like to see to go out that the Board objected to centralisation.

The Chairman said he did not think it would come to pass. Mr Barrowman said it needed a gr )d deal of thought. On his motion the matter "'as held over till the next meeting. Board members meanwhile to peruse the circular.
