(I'er Press Association — Copyright )

WELLINGTON, November 16

(< W e are reduced to asking the Minister of Justice to allow us to perpetuate a system of breaking the law,” said Mr L. Hennessey (Hawkes Bay) when commenting at the national conference of School Committees' on the -warning issued by the Commissioner of Police to the effect that euchre parties at which prizes are given are illegal. A remit wa 6 carried stating that with reduced capitation committees had to fall back on other means of raising money. . The' statement made by the Commissioner of Police' was brought to the notice of the conference by Mr H. R. Hunt (Otago), who said that many committees regarded euchre parties as the main channel of revenue. ■Mr N A Ingram said the Police 'Commissioner 'had acted on instructions from the Minister of Justice. The association was sending a deputation which would wait upon the Minister to-mor-row _ to ask him to take steps which would enable euchre parties to be he for the purpose of raising funds for school purposes. Mr A. J. Phillips said he would not ag re e to joining a deputation to the Minister of Justice to ask him to allow facilities for gambling. He agreed tha the capitation -was not enough, but it could be supplemented in other. ways. Mr L. J. McDonald thought it was straining the position t 0 call euchre parties gambling. Some schools could raised money by concerts and dances, hut others could only rely on 'euchre parties. Tjhe money was used to . keep the children warm- in winter, owing to the insufficiency of the capitation allowance. “It is more virtuous tp keep the children warm and provide a supplementary library and material for sports and games, v . added the sp ea k e r.
