In order to clear up that-ambiguity, in tihe law, it is understood thatathe :‘Hospital arid Amendment Bill, which iilikely to; be introduced in the House of Representatives this week, will contain a provision making thy position definite. ■ --fp , . , -While the present legislation state-: that boards may -establish >ruch eerj wices, ithefe 'is no Mandatory power! .but it isi understood the Bill propose? .to confer.such authority on the Dir-ector-General of Health, where it. deemed '-expedient that maternity caseshould ■-lie l catered for. Many -.hospital board's make provision fOf maternity cases, -but-: others have challenged'- the right of the department to insist on such facilities being provided. It is understood the -department takes i-he view that, ’by providing maternity-ser-vices, the boards, actually stand to gain by avoiding liability for illnesses which may arise'- from such cases.
