MANY VACANT PLOTS
GARDEN 1 ALLOTMENT SCHEME
WELLINGTON, November 12,
“Out of - 899 plots provided, only 192 have been sown and planted to date. It is for those in authority iat the Labour Bureau to expiain why the men who should have done so have not started on the plots provided. I have tor the .time Dung Held over providing more plots. The ground' is trenched. Ilakes and hoes are provided for each area, and the! seed and,, pulp vires .are .available at nominal rates.”
This was the concluding clause in report submitted to the central garden allotments committee by Mr J. G. MacKenzie, director of city reserves, to a, meeting held yesterday afternoon. Mr MacKenzie said l that there seemed to be some hitch between the delivery of the forms to the men and theenforcing of tlio demand laid down by the Unemployment Board. There bad been cases where men had asked him for two plots, but as far as he was concerned they hadl Ml been allocated. He had written to the Labour Depart- j ment to take action of some kind. The matter was a difficult one, as even the men on the staff were among the unemployed, 'and there was a danger of overlapping.
