TWO SHOPS IN CHRISTCHURCH

A fire broke out at ten o’clock tonight in a two-storeyed brick building containing a number of Ishops, at,the corner of Colombo and Tuam Streets. The fir© originated in a fruit shop, occupied by Patrick Garvey. It spread to the neighbouring tenants’ premises. Garveyls shop was gutted. The other places were damaged, mostly by smoke and ’water, and were those of Harry Cuthibertson, rubber goods dealer; H. F. Howard, tobacconist ; Albert Boal, dancing instructor ; and Leonard Beesley, office. The building, which is owned by Leonard Banks, is injured, and also the contents of the shop. The amounts are unavailable.
