DISTRICT RIDING WORKS
Northern Riding.—Kumara to Ivapi- j tea £2 for £1 grant. Thi s work was put in hand and 9J chains of forma- t tion and 5 chains of metalling completed in a satisfactory manner. Unemployed labour was usefully engaged in clearing and repairing Kumara and Teremakau Settlement roads, cleaning loose stone off Kumara to Kapitea (old metalling), cleaning drains and clearing portions of ithe” main highway, reducing sides, cleaning'and repairing Awatuna Road, j clearing Gillams Gul’y road, repairing | planked culvert leading to church at Goldsborougli, metalling the riewfly J formed portion of Spencer Road ; clean- 1 ing drain on One Mile Road, cleaning | and repairing Arohura VaTley Road, clearing, draining and improving a portion of Arahura' School ground, extending drain through Mr Bond’s pronerty and cleaning watertables on Blue Spur-Afah'ura Road. Central Riding.—Casual labour was engaged assisting with repairs to bridges and approach railing to Kokatahi bridge, ajso in widening Lake Kanieri Road beyond the mile peg. Unemployed labour was usefully engaged in draining Bnu Han Road, cleaning watert'ables and repairing scours on Hoki-tika-Hau Hau, and Lake Kanieri R'oads; grubbing gorse, reducing high sides, cleaning watertables and drains on Blue Spur Road; repairing, draining, and constructing, a concrete pipe culvert on Back Creek Road, repairing South Hokitika Road, and extending road drains along the frontage of J. | Crowley’s property. Filling gravel for repairs to Municipal and? Station Roads, clearing blackberry and other growth from the secondary highway from Municipal to Camelback Road, draining Koiterangi, Wall, Cropps, and a short portion, of Municipal Road, cleaning creek outlet to Dawsons Road drainage, clearing, draining and widening portions of Lower Kokatahi Road and repairing Kauieri Tram Road wltn gravel as far as Pine Tree Roaa. I Southern Riding.—Unemployed labour effected repairs to Ruatapu and Ruatapu Beach Roads, repairing several defective culverts on Totara Track, continued the. clearing of Evans Road . drains. '1 he resident roadman at Harikari effected repairs to district reads, also to a defective culvert on Wangapui Flat . Road. The contractor for Purcell Road completed the specified work of forming and metalling the low portion of Purcell Road which was al-1 ways subject to flooding during web weather, □''he completed work is now! well above flood' level, and should be satisfactory. 'Unemployed labour was engaged continuing the clearing, and improvement of Okarito and Waiho Domains. SECONDARY HIGHWAYS REPORT. Lower Kokatahi, McArthur Road.— Repairs were effected to motor worn holes and scours over a distance oi ton miles, absorbing 96 cubic yards of fine gravel. /Two scours over the surface of two concrete pipe culverts, were repaired with six cubic yards of , gravel. A subsidence fhrough scour i of a portion of the. manuka, scrub facing of Kokatahi bridge protection was repaired with a load of strong scrub. ■ The break below* the bridge on an unprotected portion of the bank w*as | attended to by Mr Harris, the ourner of the property who was provided with four wire nets and tw*o coils of wire, also a load of stone and scrub. Casual labour was employed in increasing the width of traffic planking on Harris Creek bridge No. 4. Defective decking was removed and replaced oh Koka- j tahi bridge. Unemployed labour was engaged in completing a. short section of widening at the first cutting at Lake Rond intersection; also cleaning road drains 500 links in length, clearing, blackberry and other growth from the roadside ifor 30 chains in length; removing soil accumulation from each side of the road and filling in an unused drain for 1000 links in length, drain for 1000 links in length. The approach railway to the southern end of Kokatahi bridge was placed in order. Upper Kokatahi Road.—Motor worn holes were repaired ' with gray *1 over a . distance of three miles a jsorbing twelve cubic yards; low* pla r es lepAred and roadside dump replenis! ed with cubic yards of gravel. Lake Kanieri Road.—Repairs were effected to motor worn holes a distance of four miles using fifteen cubic yards of gravel. A subsidence through scour of a portion of the eastern approach to McKay’s Creek bridgej was .repaired with stone and gravel and win? lining Bx 4 placed in position to retain the,!ifißing, approximately 173 cubic yards of stone ant. gravel. Watertables were cleaned on the western side of Stoney Creek. Unemployed labour assisted to fill the material in to the lorry for repairs to the subsidence at McKay’s Creek bridge, cleaning watertables 10 chains, clearing inlets and outlets to culverts from Coni Creek to Lake Kanieri, stripping sofT from gravel in readiness to widen the cutling beyond Kanieri River bridge, also clearing 500 links and widening 2 feet wide 300 links.
Detour Road.—Repairs were effected to motor worn holes and scours
over tins whole length of road oil three separate occasions during the niontl rlisnrliinjT 72 cubic yards of gravel. Defective decking was renewed on the first footbridge;
