Roosevelt is the thirty-second American to achieve the coveted distinction of administratively ruling (within defined limits) his own- country. He will a sumei office as President at midnight, March 4th., 1933, and' will receive a salary of 75,(00 dollars annually for travelling expenses. By virtue of position as Co-m----mander-in-Chief of the- Army and Navy of the United States, the President can use the services of a naval vessel at any time, the expenses involved falling upon the Navy Department. The Presidential oath or affirmation is ns follows:—“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of the President of the United States, and will, to the bast of my ability, preserve, protect, and .d'efend tire- Constitution of the United States.” The Presidential term is four years, and the Piesident cannot be removed from office except “on impeachment for and conviction of treason, bribery, or oth»-r high crimes rnd misdeamours.” He is invested with great -administrative no we ns. No President lias served for longer than the eight years—representing two terms of office--and only one, Grover Cleveland, has ever returned to office for a second period after having once- relinquished't. The shortest term on record is that of ■William H. Harrison, who died only a- month after his - inauguration, in 1841, f(Viewing upon a great electoral victory over Van Boren. The term of the creat patriot and statesman, James A. (Garfield, was cut down to six months by the bullet- of an,- assassin iir 1881.
