When they appeared before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning, both, pleaded guilty to a charge of bookmaking. They Were approachedJhy tives after the seventh race, when they were about to pay out. The men were searched, and in Gallaher’s possession a race book was found with many marks on it that were not found on the average race-goer’s book. Austin had the money. There was a total ot £27/8/2 in his pockets. After the search the men made a clean breast of things, and appeared voluntarily at the Court. Austin was put off the course two years ago for tlie same, offence, but nothing was known against Gallaher except the present offence. Both wore labourers, and apparently they had only been betting in silver. “They, seem to have had a good bit on the seventh race,” remarked the Magistrate after examining the book produced by the police.
