AUCKLAND, November 9.
The formation of a new inclutsti ial union among workers at the freezing works at Southdown lias been- undertaken by new employees who were engaged by the company after the Union slaughtermen - and other workers had refused to accept the new terms of employment. A meeting of about eighty men was held at Southdown works to consider the proposal, l and a resolution unanimously adopted that a new union be formed, to be known aw the ‘Southdown Freezing Workers ’Union. The requisite number of members was enrolled, and temporary officials and an executive,, were elected to take preliminary steps to establish the movement An application has already Leon made to the registrar at Wellington, stated one of the temporary officials.
This step was taken .purely-as a protective measure, said one of the provisional executive. He stated that men -npw employed at: Southdown had felt that they had to. stand together to. resist any attempt on , the part of the former Unionists to supersede them in employment. ~..At Westfield works, it was stated, a similar proposal was being discussed by :.the employees.: -No definite step had been, taken, but there: was-a likelihood that. a separate movement, to covet* the West-field: Workers only, wpuld be launched -at on curly date.
