ACCLIMATISATION

WESTLAND COUNCIL MEETING

AN OPEN SEASON NEXT YEAR.

The Council of the Westland Acclimatisation Society met last evening, tliere being present—Dr E. Teichelmann (president) and Messrs J. jj. Mclntosh, A. C. Armstrong, W. Braddon, J. King, R. Paterson. Inward correspondence was received as follows:

From Land and Survey ’ Department, regarding milling rights .applied for by Mr Thomson, of Mananui, and stating that the Society’s reserve was vested for the preservation of flora and fauna. From Department of Internal Affairs, thanking Society for information regarding their inquiry concerning the; haunts of the Little, or German, Owl ( ' —Received.

From same, advising that the Department would carry out deer destruction operations in South Westland, and that no season for stalking under licenses would be:; declared. —Received. From same, thanking the Society for granting the Department the use of Landsborough Hut at South Westland. —Received.

From J. Forbes, referring, to deer destruction operations in South Weßtland.—Received.

From Messrs W. Thomson and W. D. Detlaff, of Ross, asking permission to shoot pukeko, which were destroying their crops. After discussion it was decided to refer the matter to the Department of Internal Affairs. From Department of Internal Affairs, re open season for game. It was decided to recommend that next season be an open season for the whole of the Society’s district; that the season extend from May, 1933 to July, 1933; that the game which may be shot he pukeko, black swan, grey duck during the season, and paradise duck during May only; that the combined bag of native game shall not exceed - 20; that the same arrangements as last season be made regarding the printing and issue of licenses; and that means whereby game may be taken be by gun only, the bore not to exceed No. 12 and that the license fees be the same as last season.

The president reported that he had attended - the conference as • the Society’s delegate, and advised that the remits which had a bearing upon the Westland district had all recommended for approval. He advised that a Fish Research Committee had been formed, >and that acclimatisation societies be asked to contribute 5 per cent of the fishing license revenue towards the cost of the researches.

It was decided to adopt the report, and a vote of thanks was accorded the president for acting as the Society’s delegate, and that the matter of contributing towards the research commission be held over.

It was brought under the society’s notice that poaching activities were becoming very marked. After discussion it was decided to offer a reward of £o for information leading to the conviction of people caught fishing for trout or salmon without a license.
