MINER KILLED

A FATALITY AT REWANUI

CAUSED BY A RUNAWAY TRUCK

GREYMOUTH, Nov. 4,

A fatality occurred in the northern West section of the No. 2 Middle Brake (Liverpool) State Mine, at llewanui tins afternoon, shortly after 3.10 o’clock, when William Partington, a miner, was killed by a runaway truck on an incline.

The truck became derailed half way down the incline, and while Partington was assisting in lifting it back on to the rails from the front, the jack pin came out, and he was carried down l|> the bottom with the weight of tlie truck, which apparently broke In. hack. Another miner, Frank McCarthy, fortunately jumped clear.

It w s necessary for Partington to lift thtf truck*back on to the rails from the front, as the jack pin was at the back. His wtrknute, Fr.nk Lee, observed the accident, but was not in a position to avert it. The deceased, who was 57 years of age, had resided at Dunollie for the past 25 years. He was a. native of Lancashire, England, and was a highlv respected resident. He is survived by a wife, who has, for the past fifteen months, been an invalid, and a grownup daughter, with whom great sympathy will be felt.

The late Mr Partingtpn was a member of the Seddon Lodge of Druids, of which he was a charter member, the lodge being formal some 27 years a B o.
