An allegation that advertisements were appearing in newspapers at Home offering work in New Zealand to boot operatives was made in the House by Mr F. Jones, (Lab., Dunedin South), who asked the Government to make immediate enquiry into the matter through the High Commissioner.'’ A number of boot operatives in the Dominion were unemployed and others were working short timei, he said. To bring other operatives to the Dominion would cause hardship to those who came and to thosy already in the country.—Press Assfe.

Squadron Leader Captain M. C. McGregor, M.C. D.F.C., and bar, has been retained by the Manawatu Aero Club as instructor for the next j six months. Captain McGregor has flown over thirty types of aeroplanes, and has spent several thousand hours a loft. He is a New Zealander, and was one o'.'fthe'Empire’s air successes in the war, and commanded the famous 59th Squadron on the Western Front. He is the “Mac” in the book “War Birds,” and while his stunting exhibitions always thrill the crowds to-day, bis wonderful ability in this direction was gained in the serious business of fightng the enemy aeroplanes during the Great War.

For weeks past members of the local Fire Brigade have been practising_ on Cass Square for the annual demonstration, which is to take place there on Saturday of next . week. There ivill be teams from all West Coast Brigades competing and some excellent work should result. The death took place at Rosk last evening at the residence of her daughter, Mrs R. Donaldson, Mborhouse Street, of Mrs Isabella Kernick. The deceased who formerly lived at Blackball, had been , living in Ross for soma years. Deceased was 87 years of age. v ■
The benefit performance to be given at the Princess Theatre on Tuesday’ night by the Hokitika Operatic Society when they will again present the successful opera “Merrie England” in/ aid of the Hokitika Fire Brigade funds, should attract >a large attendance. As the- result of a/ collision which occurred at the junction of William and Grin ness .Streets, Greymouth, yesterdr y afternoon, a young man, Leslie Hughes, of Nelson Street, Karoro, had hiSi leg broken. -He was riding pilliofl on a motor-cycle, with side attachment, driven by Michail Ellery,’also of Nelson Street, Karoio. Ellery and Hughes were proceeding along William Street, and,’on ing the junction with Guinness Stm t, the cycle collided with a heavy motorlorry, leaded with telegraph poli fo , which was proceeding along Guinness Street. The lorry was driven by Leslie Gordon Lukev, of the Po-t cud Telegraph Department, who had with him two other members of the staff Hughes was. unable to get free of the cycle, and his leg was fractured. After receiving attention from Dr Ray, ho was conveyed to the Grey River Hospital. Little damage was done to thel cycle, and it was driven away after the collision. The‘lorry escaped damage.

This morning,)&t 9 o’clock Jfif’Beach street, at his front gate, a motor ■ cycle owned by, Mr jj. W: Heenan ignited and was completely destroyed. .- Mr Heenan wa s , about to leave on his round as paymaster of the unemployedHe mounted the machine and kicked off. The engine back, fired and at once burst into flamee,' and in spite of every effort the flames could not be Subdued fuel the machine was completely wrecked. The machine iwas valued at £25 and was not insured. •
