PRICE LEVELS
IN PLIGHT THAN BRITAIN
(per Press A ssoriuHon-- Copyright.)
WELLINGTON, Nov, 2. In his presidential address to-aay
at the annual meeting of.the,N.Z. Employers’ Association, Mr Mitchell said that in the matter. Qt. the price, level, New Zealand is in a much worse position than Britain. Taking the price level for the years 1928 and 1929 as 100, he' found the British price level was down to £67 (47.5 gold), but in New Zealand'the price level was down to £4B (84 gold). Xu terms of New Zealand pounds, -however, the N.Z. price level, was' 58. , Mr Mitchell wfent on to show that farmers’ costs, like .other costs, must be reduced. While export prices were ’• 21 per cent below the- 1914 level,/retail* prices - were still approximately 81 per cent above the 1914 level. There . was, however, a .definite downward move of retail prices, since the level above 1914 was 56 per cent in 1980, 44 per cent in 1931, and was “now down to 31 per cent. The disparity between the export and retail prices * had the effect of stagnating internal trade, and there was a necessity/ still further to apply themselves to. the problem of reducing internal costs. -
