NEW ZEALAND HEMP
•REHABILITATION prospects. ECONOMY COMMITTEE’S REPORT. I Ter I'ress Association — Copyiigilt.f WELLINGTON, Oct. 31. The Imperial ■ Economic Committee ih their ieport on hemp fibres make several suggestions for the rehabilitation of the New Zealand hemp industry. Research to improve the strains, better machinery for stripping the loaves and reorganisation of the industry itself are' all strongly recommended. jne report deplores the discontinuance of research work which had be-' gun to show promising resuits. It is thought that the plan of offering a bonus, which the New,, Zealand government adopted ill 1930 lor the* invention of a -commercially' practicable process for improving the fibre, is less advantageous' than would be continuous experiment such as couid be secured by the appointment oi 1 an agricultural engineer. ' -
Milling and haulage Costs per ton of fibre are very much higher in New Zealand than in Kenya, though New Zealand seems to have the advantage cf smaller overhead end depreciation charges! v “
< The report covers,, all the fields of Empire production—lndian and Mauritian hemp, East African, and West Indian sisal, in addition to New Zealand |hemp, and discusses the prospects for extending the use of these fib res for 1 making , ropes, cords and strings in Empire countries.
