MONK THRASHED
BY SHAH AT SACRED SHRINE. Because of an insult to liis queen, the Shah o-f Persia, JUza Khan, has soundly thrashed ft-' priest at a-' shrine at Meshed, in the northern area- of the kingdom!' Tlie queen enered a shrine to pray, wearing & Western costume, but veil-, qd; T'ninking there was no one there she pulled aside !l hter Yeil.' J" ' The priest had noticed her, however, and began" to ■ revile her, apparently ignorant of the i act-that lie was addleilsing the queen. In his verbal dnslaught lie attacked Western manners and'fashions,-'and so ’ excited did he become that a crowd gathered. Detectives and army officers who were, waiting for the queen to leave the shrine, went quickly to her support, and she was escorted;to safety. The Shah was informed' of the incident by telephone, And hurried to his wife’s side. Next day, he went to the shrine, where the same priest was in charge. Without a word, it is alleged, the Shah seized and,-belaboured him.
; The Shad was wearing khaki at the time,' and the- people at the shrine were completely overawed by liis resolute behaviour. The Shah accompanied the queen back to Teheran,, and the priest- was fined for insulting behaviour. •
