YACHTS CAPSIZE
AUCKLAND HARBOUR MISHAP. YOUTH’S LONG SWIM FOR HELP. (Per Press Association — Copyright. AUCKLAND, October 30. In heavy weather this afternoon a fourteen-foot yacht capsized off St. Heller’s Bay. Its occupants were four young iiifc.il, who were rescuied only with difficulty in high seas that were running. Forunately the capsize occurred near the reef, ait dead low water, and the four yachtsmen clambered on the the reef. 1
gome time before their plight was noticed from the 'Shore, one of the four, a youth liamedl M. Madden, decided to swim ashore, over a distance of one mile. The task was a difficult ■and dangerous one, in view of film rough seas prevailing, but he made >a iino effort, being picked up one hundred yards l orn the shore by a dinghy, which had come out to meet him.
A launch then went out to the reef, and it picked up the others, who were suffering from cold and exposure.
Their yacht soon became submerged. Salvage will be attempted to-morrow. During the squally weather a small sixteen-foot staling yacht capsized in the harbour off Kauri Point this morning. The crew of two young men were rescued by a ferry launch. Afterwards they were trn referred to a pilot launch, which towed the capsized yacht to P : rt-°nhend.
